Firefighters from Egham cleared smoke from Sunrise Care Home, Christchurch Road, caused after a bread roll was left too long in a microwave oven on Sunday (November 16) at about 10.45pm.

The crew arrived at the home and cleared the smoke from the kitchen and reception areas and re-set the fire alarm.

No-one was hurt in the incident.

Runnymede MP Philip Hammond visited Virginia Water Pre-School to show his support for their project to relocate to Trumps Green Infant School site in Crown Road, Virginia Water.

The bid to relocate from the Community Centre, in Beechmont Avenue, Virginia Water, was launched in May by the nursery, which says it needs about £500,000 to build a new classroom on the Trumps Green site.

Mr Hammond, MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, came to the school on Friday (November 14) to chat to teachers about the potential move.

Residents in caravan site plea

Hardstandings, cess pits, fencing and the gravel driveway of a Virginia Water caravan site will have to be dug up or demolished, if Runnymede planners refuse an application on Wednesday November 19

A group of gypsies were fed-up with waiting for Runnymede Council to find somewhere to permanently locate them took it upon themselves to develop land which they own, off Lyne Road, building permanent hardstandings and cess pits for twelve caravans.

A gravel driveway was dug and fencing put up to segregate the plots on the former landfill site, known as Pondover Landfill, before an application was submitted to the council for the work.

After concerns raised by neighbours and advice from key consultees, officers have recommended the application be refused at tonight's meeting, the result of which would be the demolition of all the work done on the site.

Travellers first appeared on the site in 1997 and have been there on and off ever since, however on arriving at the site on June 14, this year, they began work laying hardcore over the land before submitting a planning application two days later.

Eleven letters of objection were received from neighbours, citing various reasons, including that the development was inappropriate, on Green Belt land and that it would lead to increased road volumes and increased risk of accidents on the narrow country lane.
