A popular children's entertainer will delight at the Virginia Water Community Centre on Saturday, March 13 at 2pm.

The event, organised by the Virginia Water Community Association will feature entertainer Billy Bonkers as well as free interval refreshments.

Firefighters attended a care home after an electrical flood triggered an automatic fire alarm at 2.40am on Wednesday, February 24.

The incident took place at Merlewood Nursing Home, on Hollow Lane.

Firemen had to turn off the mains electricity supply before clearing the water.

A demonstration of encaustic wax will be presented to the Virginia Water Art Society when it meets at the Community Centre on Beechmont Avenue tomorrow (Wednesday, March 3) at 7.30pm.

A conservation group will be doing coppicing work on Sunday, February 28 from 10am until 1pm.

The Egham & Staines Conservation Volunteers will be undertaking the work at Riverside.

Trumps Green Womens' Institute will learn the secrets of handwriting from a talk on Wednesday, February 24.

Mrs S Biddle presents the talk, 'All is revealed in your handwriting' at the Community Centre, Beechmont Avenue, at 7.45pm.

An ex-BBC Radio Two Dj visited a Virginia Water care home on Wednesday November 25 to dish out the residents favourite songs.

Ed Stewart, known as Stewpot to his fans, took requests from residents at Merlewood Care Home, in Hollow Lane, which included songs from Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, and pianist Russ Conway.

The swinging sixties come to the village with a special night of music and dance on Saturday, November 21 at 8.15pm.

Dancing to the Touchstone Experience is organised by Virginia Water Community Association and includes a cold buffet.

Sixties fancy dress is optional. BYO drinks and glasses.

Hundreds of poppy-wearers observed two-minutes silence at one of the most picturesque memorials in the county for Remembrance Day yesterday (Sunday, November 8).

At 11am, more than two hundred people made no peep as Reveille piped out and filled the grounds of the Royal Air Forces Memorial on Cooper's Hill, Englefield Green, where the names of 20,000 service men who lost their lives fighting for their country are etched on its walls.

An extremely rare brown shrike was spotted on Staines Moor prompting thousands of birdwatchers to drop everything and flock to the beauty spot over the last ten days to catch a view of the small brown spectacle. Herald & News reporter Russell Butt donned his wellies and grabbed his binoculars to see what all the fuss was about.

There's not many things more frustrating than when your holiday plans go awry.
So imagine the surprise of one small, brown bird who should be heading from Siberia to South East Asia for the winter, but has found himself perched atop a hawthorn bush in Staines.

Imagine its further surprise to instantly achieve celebrity status on arrival, with more camera lenses being pointed at it than Kate Moss gets stumbling out of a Soho nightclub.

The Wonder Years Choir will perform at the Virginia Water Community Centre on Saturday, October 10 at 8pm.

The concert, organised by the Virginia Water Community Association costs £4 for members, £5 for non-members and includes tea and biscuits.
